The Firm as a Function

As a society, we fine-tuned our understanding of the firm as a function, and we got stuck. In 1973, Drucker revealed the essence of this black box with inputs and outputs: "the purpose of business is to create and keep a customer." In 1985, Porter took us deeper with the value chain. Then, in the late 1990's, we fluffed up that concept and developed the business model. Still there today.

Go Beyond

Companies die younger, and the product life cycles are growing shorter. In the age of big data and automation, the secret of long-term success lies not in how well you optimize a black box, but in how you simultaneously juggle multiple black boxes. Make your big picture bigger by seeing the firm as a collection of ofmos (offering-market cosmos) a complex system with emergent behaviors!
