OFMOS® Essential

The Business Big Picture Game®. A demanding strategy game for 2–4 players. Simple rules. Deep strategy. Real decisions.

1. The Game
Nine Products, Nine Environments, One Strategic Mind

OFMOS® Essential is a tabletop strategy game for two to four players. The rules take minutes to learn. A session runs 20 to 60 minutes. The adaptive strategy takes games to develop — and that is the point.

Like chess, it rewards deep thinking without requiring any prior knowledge to begin. Like backgammon, the same game works across a wide range of player experience. Unlike either, it is built on a precise theoretical account of how individuals decide, how products commoditize, and how companies and economies evolve — which means that the strategic intuitions it develops are directly transferable to real decisions in real strategic environments.

Each player manages a portfolio of nine products across nine environments on a shared 81-position board. Every turn, a CEO takes one action — launch a product, commoditize it, innovate it, or retire it — with real point consequences. Synergy formations between adjacent products generate bonus returns. The player who accumulates the highest score wins.

No business knowledge is required. No facilitator is needed. The rulebook provides everything.

2. How to Play
Two Stages, Six Core Actions, One Board

Stage 1 — Activate: Each CEO launches products one per turn into each of the nine environments, building their initial portfolio on the shared board.

Stage 2 — Operate: After the launches, CEOs take turns executing one action per turn, choosing from the remaining five actions available to manage their portfolio for maximum returns: product commoditization (move down), product innovation (move left, reducing complexity), product innovation (move right, increasing complexity), market innovation (move up, increasing perceived value), or product retirement (exit the board).

Eliminating a competitor's product is possible on downward and lateral moves, adding a competitive dimension to portfolio management. Synergy formations between three or more horizontally adjacent products generate bonus points and reward coordinated thinking.

The game ends when any CEO's last product is removed from the board. The CEO with the most points wins.

3. What Makes It Compelling
A Strategy Game That Rewards the Way You Think

Every action in OFMOS® Essential has a consequence. Commoditize a product and collect points, but move it closer to the exit without maximizing its potential within the portfolio. Innovate and reposition for the future, but forgo immediate returns. Build a synergy formation and earn a bonus, but expose your products to competitive pressure and leave other spaces open for grabs by your competitors. Retire too early and lose points as costs of lost opportunities. Retire too late and watch your portfolio commoditize beneath you.

The board is shared. Your opponents are real. Their strategies interact with yours. What looks like a winning portfolio in isolation may be vulnerable to a well-timed competitive move. What looks like a defensive position may be the foundation for a devastating synergy. The game creates the conditions for genuine strategic thinking — not because it tells you to think strategically, but because the mechanics demand it.

There is a deeper structure beneath these trade-offs. Every turn, the player faces multiple candidate actions — and the action they choose is simultaneously a goal and a decision. It is a goal because it reflects what the player is trying to accomplish within their portfolio at that moment. It is a decision because the player selected it over the alternatives available. The alternatives not chosen do not disappear. They remain on the board as latent options — paths not taken that could be activated on a future turn if conditions change, if an opponent's move reshapes the landscape, or if a new priority emerges. A good strategist is aware of these latent options even as they commit to the one they chose. The game makes this visible: the board holds every alternative in plain sight, and the consequences of choosing one path over another are traceable across turns.

4. What It Develops
The Skills That Experience Builds and Passive Instruction Cannot

Whether played abstractly or as a simulation, OFMOS® Essential develops the strategic meta-skills that underlie every significant decision: systems thinking, reasoning under uncertainty, portfolio management, strategic positioning, and long-term strategic planning. These are the skills that AI concentrates demand for — and that no amount of passive instruction can reliably produce.

OFMOS® Essential is the center of a strategy capability flywheel. The learning solutions — built around the game and structured by the Five Scales framework — are designed to build momentum with use. Each game builds on the last. The strategic patterns a player begins to recognize after a few sessions become the foundation for deeper engagement with the theories, the framework, and the real world. The system starts with the first match.

5. Play Options
One Game, Multiple Experiences

OFMOS® Essential supports multiple play experiences from the same box.

Abstract play uses the base rules as a pure strategy game. No business context. No terminology. Just the board, the pieces, and the strategic logic.

Business simulation uses the same rules with business concepts mapped to every action. The board becomes a Product Portfolio Map. Moves become strategic decisions. The debrief connects gameplay to real-world frameworks. Ideal for classrooms and workshops with a facilitator.

Mods are player modifications that personalize the strategic experience — each adds a new dimension to the gameplay without changing its core mechanics. Four official Mods are available: Enhanced Market Innovation Capability, Randomized Boards, Vertical Alignments, and Hot Zones. Any increase in complexity wanes with repeat play; what remains is each player's individual preference for how they want the game to feel. Additional scale-specific mods are in development.

6. In the Classroom
A Ready-Made Experiential Tool for Strategy Educators

OFMOS® Essential integrates naturally into introductory strategy courses, MBA competitive strategy modules, business policy courses, and capstone programs. It functions as a scaffolding tool early in a course, a capstone experience at the end, or a recurring simulation across a full semester. A structured debrief connects gameplay decisions directly to course concepts and frameworks.

The game is the experiential component of five strategy learning solutions, developed around the OFMOS® family of games and structured by the Five Scales of the Business Big Picture — a strategy framework that identifies five levels of reality at which strategic thinking operates. Each learning solution focuses on a different scale, from the individual decision to the economy as a whole.

The game requires no preparation beyond reading the rulebook. The Business Concepts section maps every action to its real-world strategic equivalent, providing the foundation for debriefs. Learning Guides are available separately for facilitators who want structured session designs across each of the five scales. Detailed Learning Guides for each scale are in development.

7. In a Coaching Context
A Strategic Thinking Tool for Coaches and Their Clients

OFMOS® Essential gives coaches something most coaching tools do not: a shared, observable system where a client's strategic patterns become visible in real time. Portfolio management decisions, strategic responses, risk tolerance, short-term returns versus long-term positioning — these surface naturally during play, without the coach needing to prompt them.

A single match runs 20 to 60 minutes and can anchor a coaching session, a team offsite, or a multi-session professional development arc. The structured debrief connects gameplay decisions to the client's real strategic context. The game does the surfacing; the coach does the interpreting.

No special training is required. The rulebook provides everything needed. Learning Guides — in development — will include facilitation guidance for coaching contexts.

8. In the Workshop
A Flexible Simulation for L&D Professionals

OFMOS® Essential deploys effectively in corporate workshops, executive education programs, onboarding initiatives, and leadership development sessions. Single matches suit shorter sessions and introductory contexts. Tournaments suit programs where cumulative decision-making across multiple rounds is the goal. Using the scenario provided in the Learning Guide, or creating new ones, allows facilitators to map the generic board onto specific industry contexts, making the simulation immediately relevant to participants' own strategic environments.

9. At the Kitchen Table
A Serious Game for Families, Friends, and Game Nights

For parents investing in their teenagers' strategic reasoning skills, OFMOS® Essential offers a demanding and engaging alternative to conventional board games — one that develops abstract reasoning, systems thinking, and long-term perspective through play rather than passive instruction. No facilitation guide is needed — the rulebook provides everything, and the learning is in the playing.

For game night regulars, it offers something different: a strategy game with genuine depth that plays in under an hour, rewards repeated play, and gets better the more you understand it.

10. A Premium Experience
Built to Match the Depth of the Game

The main edition of OFMOS® Essential is designed as a premium object — one whose physical quality reflects the intellectual depth of the game it contains. Product pieces are precision-molded acrylic with a satisfying weight. The board assembles from thick 2mm chipboard tiles with a premium feel. Metallic paint and UV spot printing run throughout, giving every surface a tactile distinction. The box is printed inside and out, with spot UV detail, and houses a custom-designed two-piece insert that holds every component in place. Every material and production choice signals the same thing: this is a considered object, built for repeated use and a lifetime of serious play.

The main edition will be available to order via a crowdfunding campaign soon. If you want to play now, the 99 Prototypes Edition is available while supplies last.
